Dr. Johannes Buchmann, a Darmstadti Műszaki Egyetem (Techcnische Universität Darmstadt) professzorának díszdoktori avatása a Debreceni Egyetemen 2006. november 25.

Dr. Johannes Buchmann was born in 1953 in Cologne. He studied mathematics, physics, philosophy and pedagogy at the University of Cologne, where he received a teachers diploma and the PhD degree. He habilitated in 1988 at the University of Düsseldorf. In the same year he became a professor at the University of Saarland. Since 1996 he has been working at the Technical University Darmstadt as a professor for Computer Science.  Since 2001 he is the vice president responsible for teacher’s training.

The research areas of Professor Buchmann are computational number theory, cryptography and data security. The Buchmann algorithm establishes the unit group and ideal class group of algebraic number fields in parallel became one of the basic algorithms of the area. He initiated the application of ideal class groups of number fields in cryptography. Recently he is dealing with algorithms which cannot be broken with quantum computers. Professor Buchmann was awarded with the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize. He is a full member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature, Mainz and of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences as well. He is a member on the board of several scientific journals and  on the advisory boards of scientific institutes.

Professor Buchmann is not only an excellent researcher, but also a very impressive teacher. So far 32 PhD dissertations have been written under his supervision. He has a long standing cooperation with our university. Attila Pethő and Kálmán Győry have joint papers with him. He was an invited speaker at the Colloquium on Computational Number Theory, which was held in Debrecen.
