Professor Dr. Michel Carmona was born in 1940 in Cairo. He studied in Paris in the Ecole Normale Supérieure rue d’Ulm and graduated from the Sorbonne University. In 1980, he obtained the title of Doctor of Earth Sciences and Regional Development and he became the professor of geography and regional development in 1998 at the Sorbonne University. He has been the Director of the Institute of Urbanism and Regional Development and the leader of the Doctorate School ever since. His works had been translated into several languages. He is also the Secretary-General of the Paris and Ile-de-France Research and Education Centre and the Chairman of the Urban Development Planning Institute of Paris.

Professor Carmona had a determining role in the foundation of the world-famous school of regional development and urbanism at the Sorbonne University. He initiated the foundation of the post-graduate urbanism-regional development course in Hungary. Debrecen was the first from among the Hungarian cities where it was started three years ago. Carmona professor, himself, is one of the leaders and regular lecturers of the course. He has played leading role in building co-operations between the Paris Sorbonne University and the University of Debrecen, and in the introduction of the leading French practices of regional development and urbanism in Hungary.
