The diabetology working group of the Pediatrics department organizes diabetes/ celiac demonstration kitchen events on a monthly basis, always followed by arts and crafts activities in current topics (harvest, Christmas, carnival, Easter, Mother’s Day, Children’s Day). The department has also organized a summer camp for overweight children and children with diabetes for more than 10 years now (for more information visit www.diabklub.hu). These events are complemented by various trips and excursions (to Santa city, the Hungaroring, wildlife park, and the Lego factory), with many other destinations planned for the future. Besides the community programs, there are various (further) training options in the field of diabetes organized for children and their parents.
In order to improve the services provided for children treated with diabetes and endocrine problems at our department, we conduct quality of life surveys and psychological counseling regularly, this way also helping them experience their disease as less of a burden.
With the use of various grants, we could purchase such gym equipment which is partly needed for changing the children’s way of living while also being indispensable for the physiotherapy of children hospitalized at the department. The donations to the foundation and the regular programs of the Mosolygó kórház (smiling hospital) greatly contribute to making the department child-friendly.
With the help of the TÁMOP-4.1.1.C-13/1/KONV-2014-0001 grant, the staff of the Department of Pediatrics compiled a BLS educational material, with which they provided modern basic life support trainings not only for the university staff and faculty but also for students and teachers in primary and secondary schools. With the help of the Szent Márton Gyermekmentő Alapítvány [St. Martin Pediatric Emergency Foundation], the youngest children were introduced into the basics of life saving and first aid in kindergartens.
