Department of Neurology

The primary function of the Department of Neurology at the Clinical Center of the University of Debrecen Teaching Hospital is to provide neurological care for the population of Debrecen (approx. 230,000 people), while it also receives patients requiring special care from the entire North-Eastern Hungary region (approx. 3 million people). 66 beds are available for the department for inpatient services. 20 of these in the general ward, 35 in stroke, 8 in the stroke-specific patient monitoring unit, and 3 in fee-paying patient care. Our department is also responsible for the emergency care of acute stroke patients in the 90 km radius of Debrecen. Emergency is a key here as the disease emerging due to the obstruction of the blood vessel can be treated with venous blood clot dissolution only within three hours and in certain special cases arterial blood clot dissolution or the removal of the thrombus with catheterization is possible within six hours.
