Rankings

The University of Debrecen is continuously improving its position in several international higher education rankings, while maintaining its leading role among Hungarian higher education institutions.

Different rankings compile their own lists according to different criteria.

Institutions are evaluated on the basis of educational, research, academic results, quantitative indicators, or students, employers and partners are asked about their opinion.

The most important international higher education rankings are

  • QS (Quacquarelli Symonds)

    • World University Rankings

      • Six Hungarian universities were included in the latest, 2020 higher education world ranking of QS. The University of Debrecen is placed 601-650th.
    • World University Rankings by Subject
      • In 2020, the programs of the University of Debrecen were ranked among the top five hundred on one broader subject list (Life Sciences and Medicine) and on four specific subject lists (Agriculture & Forestry, Medicine, Biological Sciences, Physics and Astronomy) of QS.
    • EECA University Rankings
      • QS ranked universities in emerging European and Central Asian countries under the name Emerging Europe and Central Asia (EECA). 17 universities from Hungary were included in the latest list, there are 4 Hungarian universities among the top 40: Eötvös Loránd University was placed 28th, University of Szeged 33rd, Budapest University of Technology and Economics 34th, and University of Debrecen 37th
  • THE (Times Higher Education)

    • World University Rankings

      • The 2020 list includes 8 Hungarian universities among the nearly 1400 ranked institutions, of which, the University of Debrecen, together with the University of Pécs and the University of Szeged is categorized 801-1000th this year.
    • Emerging Economies Rankings
      • Three Chinese universities lead the list of the THE ranking and seven Chinese universities can be found in the top ten. In 2020, the University of Debrecen is in the 251-300th category.
    • Impact Rankings
      • With its 44th place in the Good Health and Wellbeing category, the University of Debrecen is the best Hungarian institution in this field, and it was also ranked in further three areas among the best higher education institutions in the world in the latest Impact Ranking list of Times Higher Education, analyzing the social and economic impact of universities.
    • Europe Teaching Rankings
      • The University of Debrecen is ranked for the first time on the Europe Teaching Rankings 2019 list of Times Higher Education created based on educational excellence, in the 151-200th category
    • Ranking by subject
      • In addition to its world university rankings, the British Times Higher Education (THE), publishes its thematic world rankings every year in 11 different major subject areas. In 2019, the University of Debrecen was ranked amng the best in five thematic rankings by subject.
  • ARWU (Academic Ranking of World Universities)

    • The 2019 list is led by Harvard and Stanford University; no Hungarian university was included in the top 500. The University of Debrecen was ranked 901-1000th on the ’Top 500 Candidate’ list in 2019
  • U-Multirank

    • According to the latest evaluation, the University of Debrecen has been ranked in the best category in terms of external research revenues, the number of publications cited in patents, the companies created by graduates and the success of foreign language undergraduate programs.
  • The ranking of Leiden University (Leiden Ranking)

    • The University of Debrecen was ranked 745th in the Leiden Ranking. This means that among the Hungarian universities, the University of Debrecen was ranked in the second most prestigious place. In terms of field of subject lists, the University of Debrecen is ranked 509th in the field of ’Biomedical and health sciences’, and 571th in the field of ’Life and earth sciences’.
  • UI GreenMetric World University Ranking

    • In 2019, the University of Indonesia assessed 780 universities, within the framework of its ’GreenMetric’ project, during which they examined how ’green’ and environmentally conscious the individual institutions were. The University of Szeged – as the best Hungarian institution – was ranked 74th, while the University of Debrecen was ranked 202nd on the list.
  • Webometrics (Ranking Web of World Universities)

    • There are four Hungarian higher education institutions among the top one thousand in the Webometrics world ranking, updated in January 2020: Eötvös Loránd University was ranked 480th, Budapest University of Technology and Economics 605th, the University of Szeged 692nd, and the University of Debrecen 728th.
  • URAP (University Ranking by Academic Performance)

    • The 2018/2019 raking is led by Harvard, while six Hungarian universities were listed among the top one thousand. The best result of the Hungarian institutions was achieved by the Eötvös Loránd University, ranked 621th. The Semmelweis University was placed 639th, the University of Szeged 667th and the University of Debrecen 708th.
  • CWUR (Center for World University Rankings)

    • The list ranking the world’s top one thousand universities takes into account seven indicators when determining the order of the universities: quality of education, alumni employment, the excellence of the faculty, number, quality and influence of publications, as well as the citation rate. The University of Debrecen was ranked 724th in the world rankings.
  • Best Global Universities

    • The Best Global Universities list compiled by US News takes into account primarily the academic recognition of higher education institutions. Globally, the University of Debrecen was ranked 635th.
  • RUR (Round University Ranking)
    • The University of Debrecen was ranked 547th on the 2020 higher education world ranking of Round University Ranking (RUR), published in the spring by the Moscow-based independent organization.
    • The world’s top 1000 universities are evaluated on the list, based on 20 factors in 4 core areas: education (40%), research (40%), international indicators (10%) and financial sustainability (10%).
      • Subject Rankings

        • Round University Ranking (RUR) Subject Rankings evaluate performance of 761 world’s leading higher education institutions by 6 broad subject areas: humanities, life sciences, medical sciences, natural sciences, technical sciences and social sciences.
          The University of Debrecen was included in four thematic lists in 2019.
