Doctoral Programs

Currently 29 higher education institutions offer doctoral (PhD and/or DLA) programs in Hungary within the framework of doctoral schools accredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Committee. About 13 to 15% of those graduating from the master’s or undivided, one-tier programs continue their education in one of the doctoral programs, meaning that there are 2,5002,800 people starting their doctoral studies a year (1,300 of them with a state scholarship). The total number of those participating in doctoral training was around 7,2007,400 in the last years, with 1,6001,800 people completing their studies a year (receiving their “absolutorium”, a pre-degree certificate stating that all course-units have been completed), while 1,3001,400 doctoral degrees are awarded annually.

The number of our doctoral schools is now 24 where future scholars are educated in six disciplines. The doctoral program is supervised by the University Doctoral and Habilitation Council elected by the Senate, while the coordination of the work of doctoral schools is the responsibility of the doctoral councils of the different disciplines.
